The images are often found at nature preserves where I will hike in to a desirable location. There I start with pencil and ink drawings to record the shapes. Then black, white, and gray acrylics are used to define the range of values in the design. A small oil sketch is next completed on a canvas covered panel to capture the color. In my studio the canvas is first covered with a tinted layer of gesso, then a drawing of the large shapes is added, and finally a thin layer of oil paint is applied. The process continues with multiple layers of paint to create the color and shapes.
